Class 1: CASA Aviation Medicals2023-07-10T14:29:31+09:30

The health of air crew and air traffic controllers is an important component of aviation safety. It is therefore a requirement of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) that pilots and air traffic controllers meet certain medical standards and hold a current medical certificate.

Dr Arun Singla is an CASA approved Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) and can provide Class 1, 2 and 3 aviation medicals for pilots and trainee pilots, air-traffic controllers and flying instructors. He keeps himself up to date by actively participating in CASA medical grand rounds , CME meeting for ongoing education in the field of aviation medicine.

CASA issues three types of medical certificates. Each class of medical certificate also has a medical standard set out in tables in Part 67 of the CASR

Aviation Medical Certificate – Class 1

This medical standard applies to holders of Class 1 medical certificate to exercise their privileges of a:

  • air transport pilot licence
  • commercial pilot licence (other than balloons)
  • multi-crew pilot (aeroplane) licence
  • flight engineer licence
  • student flight engineer licence
  • Commercial and air transport pilot licence holders can perform some operations with a Class 2 medical certificate. Learn more about Class 2 medical certificates.

Class 1 medical certificate validity

A Class 1 medical certificate is valid for one year unless otherwise advised. We generally grant a Class 2 certificate at the same time as a Class 1. A Class 2 certificate may be valid for longer

A Class 2 medical certificate is required to exercise the privileges of:

Class 2 Medical Certificate Validity:

  • 4 years if you are under 40 years on the day of your medical examination
  • 2 years if you are over 40 years.
Class 3 Medical Certificate2023-07-02T00:10:20+09:30

Class 3 medical certificate if required for:

  • Air traffic control licence
  • Flight service officers.

A Class 3 medical certificate is valid for 2 years, unless otherwise advised. For more information visit the AirServices website.

Additional Tests for Class 1 & 3 Medical Certificates2023-07-02T00:12:01+09:30

The following medical tests are required for medical examination:

  • Preliminary examination: Height, weight, BP, Pulse , Visual acuity, Urine dip stick, O2 Saturation and respiratory rate.
  • ECG
  • estimation of fasting serum lipids and fasting blood glucose
  • calculation of cardiovascular risk.
  • Audiogram and Spirometry if required.

You must also have an eye examination. You will need to find a designated aviation ophthalmologist (DAO) or credentialed optometrist (CO).

Medical Certificate Renewals2023-07-01T18:12:16+09:30

The following medical tests are required for medical certificate renewals:

  • ECGs are required at the first renewal after the age of 25, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 and 40. After 40, an ECG is required annually
  • audiograms are required at the first renewal after the age of 25 and then every 5 years from the age of 25
  • fasting lipids and glucose are required at the first renewal after the age of 25 and then every 5 years from the age of 25 until age 60, when they are required annually
  • an eye examination is required by a DAO or CO at age 60, then every 2 years after

At the time of making an appointment for an Aviation Medical, you will be asked to quote your  Aviation Reference Number (ARN). If you do not have an ARN, please contact CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) on 13 17 57.

Requirements For Aviation Medicals

  • Ensure that prior to your Aviation Medical appointment, you have completed the pre-medical questionnaire via CASA’s MRS portal and paid CASA’s processing fee.

  • Medical history , including medication list from your general Practitioner and or Specialist as applicable

  • Allow approximately 45-60 minutes for the medical with your examiner including ancillary tests

  • Aviation Medical costs $325 plus GST per visit

  • We conduct hearing tests (audiogram) $75 plus GST per test
